"A Shared Death" / Paolo Giuliano
About the Play
"A Shared Death" delves into the complex dynamics of the Benavídes family. Nora mourns the death of her daughter Laura, presumed to have died from an illness. However, the arrival of Marcos, her estranged son, disrupts the official story and forces the family—and the community—to confront deep-seated prejudices about identity and truth.
This poignant play invites audiences to reflect on themes of acceptance, diversity, and family secrets, shedding light on the structural violence faced by trans individuals and challenging societal norms.

Dramaturgical Perspective

Inspired by the 2015 killing of transgender activist Diana Sacayán, "A Shared Death" was developed to explore the intersection of systemic violence, identity, and resilience. Written during the pandemic in 2020, the play draws from real-life events, interviews, and reports to build authentic characters shaped by their social class, fears, and dreams.
The work denounces the cultural, social, and economic systems that perpetuate violence against trans lives, revealing the precariousness of their existence and urging audiences to question these entrenched structures.
